National Physical Therapy Month

It’s National PT Month! Let’s Celebrate the Joy of Movement

Physical therapy exercise and movement

Did you know that October is National Physical Therapy Month? All month long, we’re recognizing the many ways physical therapy helps people enjoy healthier, more active lives–even if they’re dealing with back pain, stiff joints, or other day-to-day discomfort.

At Alpine Physical Therapy and Sports Performance, we often work with patients who assume that they need to avoid activity because they’re in pain. In reality, the opposite is true. The right kind of movement can be one of the most effective ways to manage discomfort, since it addresses the underlying cause of your symptoms rather than simply masking them.

The Benefits of Physical Therapy

Seven Ways Physical Therapy Gets You Moving Again

Persistent pain can make it difficult to stay active. Over time, this lack of activity can lead to weaker muscles, reduced mobility, and even more discomfort. As the cycle persists, important activities like gardening or playing with your grandkids can start to feel out of reach.

Fortunately, physical therapy can help break the cycle in a few key ways:

1

Reducing Pain While Keeping You Moving

Complete rest is rarely the best answer for ongoing back pain or similar conditions. Our team can guide you through progressive exercises tailored to your current pain levels and abilities. They’re designed to calm pain and encourage healing while keeping your joints and muscles moving safely.

As your symptoms improve, activities become more comfortable, and confidence begins to return.

2

Improving Strength Where Your Body Needs It Most

Targeted strengthening exercises help rebuild support around the spine, hips, knees, shoulders, and other joints, which is essential for improving stability, reducing unnecessary strain, and making everyday movements feel easier. Our PTs can show you how to build strength in a way that allows your body to adapt safely over time.

3

Restoring Healthy Movement

Tight muscles and restricted joints can limit your ability to bend, reach, turn, or walk comfortably. We combine stretching, mobility exercises, and hands-on techniques to improve range of motion and restore normal movement, which can help decrease stress on irritated tissues and make daily activities feel more natural.

Correcting Poor Movement Habits

Sometimes pain develops because your body has adopted less efficient movement patterns after an injury. Our team can evaluate how you stand, walk, and perform daily activities to pinpoint any improper movements that might be holding you back. We’ll then walk you through small adjustments to these patterns to help reduce unnecessary strain. Over time, movement and physical activity should become easier.

5

Building Better Balance

Sometimes, it’s a balance issue that can keep you from being as active as you’d like, especially if you’re older. That’s why we offer balance training that helps improve coordination, reaction time, and overall stability. Better balance reduces the risk of falls while boosting your movement confidence so you can enjoy your favorite activities.

6

Supporting Long-Term Spine Health

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit us at Alpine Physical Therapy and Sports Performance, and we work to provide treatment that goes far beyond mere symptom relief. Our team can recommend exercises to improve core strength, hip mobility, movement posture, and body mechanics for lifting or daily activities. These strategies also help lower the risk of future flare-ups and support better long-term function.

7

Creating a Personalized Plan That Fits Your Goals

No two people experience pain in exactly the same way. Whether your goal is going for an evening walk, returning to pickleball, or gardening without discomfort, our team will build a treatment plan around your unique needs.

Throughout the process, we’ll monitor your progress, adjust exercises as you improve, and give you the tools you need to stay active even once therapy ends.

Halloween Safety Guide

7 Halloween Safety Tips for a Spooktacular Night

Halloween is a creepy-fun holiday for kids, but it can also be full of hazards for your little ghosts, witches, and superheroes. You and your kids can have a safe Halloween by taking a few simple steps and staying vigilant. From costumes and trick-or-treating to driving and candy, these simple tips can help keep your family safe while still enjoying all the fun.

Stay Safe • Stay Seen • Have Fun

7 Simple Ways to Keep Halloween Safe

A little preparation can go a long way toward preventing injuries and helping your family enjoy a fun and memorable Halloween.

1

Carve Safely — or Not at All!

Children should never handle sharp knives, so parents and caregivers should always take responsibility for pumpkin carving.

For a safer alternative, let kids decorate pumpkins with paint and stickers instead of carving them. Just make sure any paint or decorating materials are nontoxic.

2

Make Costumes Safe

Costumes are the centerpiece of Halloween, but the wrong fit or design can increase the risk of trips and falls.

  • Avoid baggy or dragging costume pieces.
  • Choose bright or easily visible costumes.
  • Avoid masks that limit peripheral vision.
  • Choose comfortable, properly fitting shoes.
3

Be Seen on the Streets

Halloween means more pedestrians and more traffic. Make visibility a priority as your family heads out for trick-or-treating.

  • Walk on sidewalks instead of in the street.
  • Cross only at labeled crosswalks.
  • Add reflective tape to costumes and bags.
  • Carry glow sticks or flashlights.
  • Use strollers or wagons for younger children.
4

Be Alert Behind the Wheel

Drivers have an extra responsibility on Halloween. Children are excited and may move unpredictably, so slow down and stay especially alert.

  • Drive slowly through neighborhoods.
  • Stay off your phone.
  • Take extra time at crosswalks and intersections.
  • Turn on headlights before it gets fully dark.
  • Watch for children between parked cars.
5

Don’t Get Distracted

Excited kids can be less attentive and more unpredictable than usual. Adults need to stay focused and keep their attention on their surroundings.

Safety reminder: Keep your phone away while walking and avoid getting so caught up in conversations that you lose track of the kids around you.

6

Stick Together

If older kids are trick-or-treating without an adult, make sure everyone knows the plan before heading out.

  • Agree on the route ahead of time.
  • Stay together as a group.
  • Never leave anyone alone.
  • Stay aware of traffic and surroundings.
  • Keep phones away while walking.
7

Avoid Tummy Aches

Halloween candy can be hard to resist, but too many sweets can lead to stomachaches, constipation, nausea, and vomiting.

Encourage kids to take it easy with their Halloween haul and monitor how much candy they eat during and after Halloween.

A little moderation can help keep the fun going long after trick-or-treating ends.

Don’t Forget to Have Fun!

Halloween is meant to be enjoyed. Take the right precautions, stay alert, and give your kids plenty of opportunities to enjoy the costumes, decorations, neighborhood fun, and family memories.

Safe + fun = a spooktacular Halloween!
